Introducing SALLY: HOS-Compliant Route Planning

Published: February 5, 2026

We’re excited to introduce SALLY (Smart Automated Logistics and Load Yielding) - an intelligent dispatch and driver coordination platform built to solve a fundamental problem in trucking: the coordination gap between dispatchers and drivers.

The Problem We’re Solving

In the US trucking industry, there’s a critical disconnect between planning and execution. Dispatchers assign loads and track shipments, but they don’t plan actual routes. Drivers receive a list of stops but no detailed route plan - they’re left to figure out stop sequences, rest timing, and fuel stops on their own.

The result?

  • Manual HOS calculations prone to errors
  • Suboptimal stop sequences (unnecessary miles)
  • Poor rest timing (forced breaks at inconvenient locations)
  • HOS violations that could have been prevented
  • Missed appointments due to poor planning
  • Constant phone calls between dispatchers and drivers

This is a massive gap in the trucking tech stack. Current TMS systems assign loads but don’t plan routes. ELDs log hours but don’t recommend when or where to rest. Telematics track trucks but don’t optimize routing.

SALLY fills this gap.

Our Solution: Route Planning Platform with HOS Compliance

SALLY is a compliance-first route planning engine that generates optimized end-to-end plans, continuously monitors real-world conditions, and simplifies communication between dispatchers and drivers through automated alerts and dynamic route updates.

Key Capabilities

1. HOS-Compliant Route Planning

We don’t just optimize for shortest distance - we optimize for HOS compliance, rest timing, and fuel efficiency. Every route is validated against FMCSA regulations before a driver starts.

  • Stop sequence optimization (TSP/VRP algorithms)
  • Automatic rest stop insertion where HOS requires
  • Automatic fuel stop insertion based on range and price
  • Zero HOS violations by design

2. Continuous Monitoring

SALLY monitors 20 alert types across 6 categories, checking active routes every 60 seconds:

  • HOS approaching limits (proactive warnings)
  • Driver not moving during drive segments
  • Dock time exceeding estimates
  • Route delays impacting downstream appointments
  • Fuel levels dropping below thresholds

3. Automated Dispatcher Alerts

Instead of requiring dispatchers to constantly check on drivers, SALLY automatically generates priority-based alerts when intervention is needed:

  • Critical alerts: HOS violations, missed appointments
  • High priority: Driver not moving, dock time exceeded, fuel low
  • Medium priority: HOS approaching limit, route delays

Dispatchers can acknowledge, resolve, and take action directly from the alert dashboard.

4. Dynamic Route Updates

When conditions change (dock delays, traffic, load changes), SALLY automatically determines whether to update ETAs or trigger a full re-plan. Drivers receive updated guidance automatically, and the system maintains a complete audit trail of all changes.

5. Intelligent REST Optimization

REST optimization is a critical component of our route planning engine. When the HOS simulation detects a shortfall (driver will run out of hours before completing the route), the system analyzes whether to:

  • Insert a dedicated rest stop
  • Leverage dock time for rest
  • Recommend full rest (10h) vs partial rest (7h)

Every recommendation includes audit-ready reasoning for compliance.

Target Users

Primary: Dispatchers and Operations Managers

  • Create HOS-compliant routes with confidence
  • Monitor all active routes in real-time
  • Receive proactive alerts when intervention is needed
  • Reduce constant phone calls with drivers

Secondary: Drivers

  • Follow clear turn-by-turn guidance with rest and fuel stops inserted
  • View HOS status and compliance in real-time
  • Receive automatic plan updates as conditions change
  • Spend less time planning, more time driving

Also For: Developers and Integrators

  • Complete REST API for route planning and monitoring
  • Mock external API endpoints for POC/testing
  • Webhooks for real-time event notifications
  • Comprehensive API documentation and examples

Architecture: Three-Layer System

Layer 1: Route Planning Engine (Primary)

  • TSP optimization for stop sequence
  • Segment-by-segment HOS simulation
  • Rest stop and fuel stop insertion
  • Feasibility validation

Layer 2: Continuous Monitoring Service

  • Runs every 60 seconds per active route
  • Monitors 20 alert types
  • Proactive HOS monitoring
  • Alert generation

Layer 3: Dynamic Update Handler

  • Receives triggers from monitoring
  • Decides: Re-plan vs ETA update
  • Generates new routes when needed
  • Notifies drivers and dispatchers

REST optimization integrates seamlessly - the route planner calls the REST engine whenever HOS simulation detects a shortfall, receives a recommendation, and inserts the appropriate rest segment.

Built for Mid-Size Carriers

SALLY is designed for mid-size carriers (50-500 trucks) who are currently using TMS and ELD systems but struggling with the coordination gap. We integrate with your existing stack:

  • Pull HOS data from ELDs (Samsara, Motive (KeepTruckin))
  • Pull load data from TMS (McLeod, project44)
  • Enhance with route planning and continuous monitoring
  • Return drivers to your existing workflows

We don’t replace your TMS. We don’t replace your ELD. We fill the gap between them.

What’s Next

We’re currently in MVP development with the following roadmap:

Phase 1 (Current): Single-Driver Route Planning

  • Core route planning engine with HOS compliance
  • Automated alert system for dispatchers
  • Dynamic route updates
  • Mock external API integrations for POC

Phase 2: Fleet-Wide Optimization

  • Multi-driver assignment (VRP solver)
  • Load matching optimization
  • Driver preferences and home time
  • Team driving support

Phase 3: Live Data Integration
